เมื่อ วันที่ 25 พ.ค. นายปณิธาน วัฒนายาเลขาธิกากร รองรนายกรัฐมนตรี ปฏิบัติหน้าที่โฆษกประจำสำนักนายกรัฐมนตรี กล่าวว่า ภายในสัปดาห์นี้ถึงต้นสัปดาห์หน้า นายกรัฐมนตรีจะเชิญทูตมาพบที่ทำเนียบรัฐบาล เพื่อชี้แจงสถานการณ์การเมืองไทย การฟื้นฟูเยียวยาเหตุการณ์ทางการเมือง รวมถึงกรณีที่ศาลออกหมายจับ พ.ต.ท.ทักษิณ ชินวัตร อดีตนายกรัฐมนตรี ข้อหาก่อการร้าย พร้อมกับจะให้สัมภาษณ์สื่อต่างประเทศทุกสำนัก เพื่อชี้แจงข้อเท็จจริงที่เกิดขึ้น หลังจากนั้นจะนำทีมรัฐมนตรีเดินทางไปโรดโชว์ในต่างประเทศ เพื่อฟื้นฟูความเชื่อมั่น แต่ต้องให้สถานการณ์คลี่คลายและยกเลิกพ.ร.ก.ฉุกเฉินฯก่อน โดยอาจจะเริ่มเดินทางไปในสหภาพยุโรปบางประเทศก่อน โดยเน้นไปที่กลุ่มการเมือง การค้าที่เคยทำหนังสือสอบถามมา

นายปณิธาน กล่าวถึงแผนการสร้างความปรองดองว่า นายกรัฐมนตรี ยังยืนยันเดินหน้าสร้างแผนปรองดอง แต่ขณะนี้ต้องจัดลำดับโดยเน้นระงับยับยั้งแก้ไขสถานการณ์ การช่วยเหลือฟื้นฟูผู้ไดรับผลกระทบก่อน จึงเข้าสู่กระบวนการปรองดอง ส่วนที่นายกฯเคยประกาศเลือกตั้งใหม่ วันที่ 14 พ.ย.นั้น ขึ้นอยู่กับดุลยพินิจของนายกรัฐมนตรี จะพิจารณาอย่างไร ซึ่งนายกรัฐมนตรี ได้พูดชัดจะไม่อยู่ครบเทอม แต่ไม่รู้เมื่อไร ช่วงที่นายกฯเสนอแผนโรดแม็ปปรองดองมา เพราะมั่นใจว่า โรดแม็ปจะเดินไปได้ แต่ขณะนี้เวลาได้หายไปแล้ว 2 เดือน ก็ต้องดูว่าจะกู้กลับมาอย่างไร อย่างไรก็ตามแม้เวลาจะหายไป แต่ถ้าเสื้อแดงเข้ามาร่วมกระบวนการปรองดอง ก็อาจทดแทนเวลาที่ขาดหายไปได้ แต่ยอมรับว่า ถ้าจะให้เลือกตั้งวันที่ 14 พ.ย. คงลำบาก เพราะเวลาหมดไปแล้ว 2 เดือน.

Five pirates stand trial in the Netherlands

(CNN) -- Five suspected pirates went on trial Tuesday in the Netherlands in what is thought to be the first trial in Europe of pirate suspects.

The trial of the five Somali men opened in Rotterdam District Court and is expected to last five days, said Win De Bruin, a spokesman for Netherlands National Prosecutor's Office.

The five were captured by the Dutch Navy in January 2009 in the Gulf of Aden, off Somalia, after a cargo ship with Dutch Antilles flag was attacked, De Bruin said.

"The ship of the pirates was destroyed by the Danish Navy, and the pirates were captured and handed to the Dutch authority. They're being tried for sea robbery, and if convicted the maximum sentence will be 9 to 12 years," he said.

The men are Ahmed Yusuf Farah, 25, Jama Mohamed Samatar, 45, Abdirisaq Abdulahi Hirsi, 33, Sayid Ali Garaar, 39, and

Osman Musse Farah, 32, he said.

A different suspected Somali pirate is awaiting sentencing in the United States, where he pleaded guilty earlier this month to hijacking and kidnapping.

Prosecutors say Abduwali Abdukhadir Muse led an attack on a U.S.-flagged vessel, the Maersk Alabama, off the coast of Africa last year.

He pleaded guilty May 19 in a New York federal court to felony counts of hijacking maritime vessels, kidnapping and hostage taking, for his role in the hijacking of the Maersk Alabama in the Indian Ocean on April 8, 2009.

Muse faces a maximum sentence of almost 34 years behind bars when he is sentenced October 19.

The suspects being tried in the Netherlands spent four weeks aboard the Danish navy ship after their capture before being taken to the Netherlands, the spokesman said.

They were held in pre-trial custody while the court interviewed witnesses from the Danish Navy and seamen on the Dutch Antilles cargo ship that was under attack, he said.

Five Dutch defense lawyers are representing the suspects, he said. He did not know what plea, if any, the suspects had entered.

Germany will soon try 10 suspected pirates who were captured in the Gulf of Aden earlier this year.

They were arrested after their attempt to board a German cargo vessel, but the Danish Navy ended the hijacking and handed them over to the Dutch authorities, Bruin said.

They have since been held in the Netherlands, and Germany requested their extradition about two months ago.

Bangkok cleans up, exchange to reopen Monday

(Reuters) - Thai authorities launched a massive clean-up operation in Bangkok's charred commercial district on Sunday as the city prepared for the resumption of business after the worst riots in modern history.

Thailand's stock exchange and other financial markets will resume full-day trading on Monday, after being closed on Thursday and Friday following a wave of arson and street battles when the army dispersed thousands of anti-government protesters. "Our trading system and those of our members are ready to resume operations," Stock Exchange of Thailand President Patareeya Benjapolchai said in a statement on Sunday.

Thai stocks and the baht currency are seen likely to fall, with political risk rising and local markets yet to catch up with declines in the region over the euro zone crisis.

Government offices and schools are also scheduled to reopen on Monday, but a curfew in the city and 21 provinces was extended on Sunday for two more nights.

At least 54 people have been killed and over 400 injured since May 14. Almost 40 major buildings in the city were set on fire and the tourism and retail sectors have been devastated.

"The situation should return to normal from tomorrow when traffic returns to the roads and schools and government agencies open," Prime Minister Abhisiti Vejjajiva said in a regular weekly broadcast to the nation.

Abhisit said the curfew would remain in force for two more nights as a precautionary measure, but would last only five hours instead of the earlier eight.

"The government is striking a balance between restoring public confidence on security and minimizing the impact of the curfew on innocent people," he said.

Police said a gunman fired pistol shots at a bank building in the city's suburbs in the early hours of Sunday, but there were no casualties. It appeared to be an isolated incident, an official said.

Otherwise, the city of 15 million looked eager for normal business to resume.

Thousands of volunteers, including hundreds of high school students, descended on the commercial district with brooms and garbage bags, carting away refuse and scrubbing graffiti off the walls.

"It's very upsetting, it was a nightmare in Bangkok," said one of the students from Triam Udom Suksa school, considered among the city's most prestigious.

"I am sad but we will bring it back to life."

TROOPS WITHDRAWN

Troops were mostly withdrawn from Bangkok and remaining checkpoints handed over to the police.

The Skytrain and underground metro resumed skeleton services, with near-empty trains eerily passing above the devastated central commercial district, taken over by anti-government red-shirt protesters for more than two months.

Workers were erecting a metal barrier around the ruins of the Central World, Southeast Asia's second-largest shopping mall, set on fire at the height of the riots.

The red shirts, mainly rural and urban poor, demand new elections, saying Abhisit lacks a popular mandate and is propped up by the military and a Bangkok elite that has disenfranchised them.

Abhisit said in his broadcast that he did not wish to stay for his full term, which lasts until 2012, but did not confirm whether an earlier offer to the red shirts of a November election was still on the table.

The protesters had rejected that offer.

"It is now up to me to decide whether that election is appropriate... I don't know what is going to happen next as some people have vowed to continue their struggle, calling for the resumption of the protest in June," Abhisit said.

Red shirt leaders have said they will resume protests outside Bangkok next month, but the main anti-government Puea Thai party said it would bring a no-confidence motion against the government at a special session of Parliament on Monday.

The government is likely to easily defeat the motion.

The government will announce first quarter GDP figures on Monday, which are likely to show the $264 billion economy continued to recover well from the global financial crisis in the January-March period but was beginning to reflect the effects of the political crisis.

Even the government says there could be a contraction in economic output in the second quarter.

Thaksin: I am not Red Shirt leader

Bangkok, Thailand (CNN) -- Former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra said Wednesday he was not the leader of the United Front for Democracy, the formal name of the Red Shirt opposition, and that their movement calling for new elections is not on his behalf.

"They did not demand anything for me or on my behalf. I am not UDD leader," he said. " Any negotiation to end the demonstration or conflict must be made between the government and UDD leaders. I have no authority to negotiate on behalf of the UDD."

The anti-government protesters support Thaksin, who was ousted in a 2006 bloodless military coup and who fled the country to avoid a corruption trial.

In a statement, Thaksin accused the Thai government of defaming him when it said he was the mastermind behind the violence in the country's ongoing political crisis.

"I never approve nor agree to any use of violence," he said. "I believe in peace. I love my country as much as any member of this government. If there is any act of terrorism, it is the duty of this government to find the wrongdoer and prosecute them in the court of law."

He urged the government to not resort to violence to disperse the protesters.

"The government should be mindful that these protesters are Thai citizens. Please do not harm them. Please order the cease fire and begin the negotiation with the UDD leaders so there will be no more loss of life," he said.

Bangkok aftermath: 'Not the Thailand we know anymore'

Bangkok, Thailand (CNN) -- Some Bangkok residents ventured out on Thursday to shop and take stock of the damage done to their city one day after the government evicted thousands of anti-government protesters from a downtown district, triggering fires, riots and intense street battles.

Some shoppers at the Emporium mall -- which was not set on fire like the popular Central World mall -- drank lattes, got their hair styled or perused books. But one sign reminded them that the venue would close at 6 p.m. to leave enough time for patrons to get home ahead of a second night of a citywide curfew.

"I feel very upset. I can't believe this happened in Thailand. Killing is not acceptable in Buddhism," said Siripattra Sitisak, a 30-year-old hotelier. "I'm nervous about attacks from underground organizations that might bomb other buildings or set fire to them."

Another mall patron, Bogna Szukalska, a 25-year-old from Poland, who has lived in Bangkok for four years, said Wednesday's events showed the "face of Thailand is changing."

"When I first came here as a tourist it was to have a relaxed and good time in a safe country. It was rare to see any aggression between Thais or against foreigners," she said. "Now, I'm just very shocked. I and two of my other friends are thinking of leaving the country. It's not the Thailand we know anymore."

On Wednesday, the army surged into Lumpini Park, the area where anti-government protesters, known as the "Red Shirts," had amassed in the thousands over the last few months. After hours of intense street battles, seven Red Shirt leaders were taken into custody. Red Shirt leaders called off the protest, but it seemed as though many did not heed the call.

Smaller riots erupted throughout the city. A dozen buildings -- including a bank, a police station, a local television station and Central World, the country's biggest shopping mall -- were set ablaze. In all, 34 buildings were torched, a government spokesman said.

At least 44 people have been killed in clashes in the last several weeks, and nearly 400 people were injured, government officials said.

Government officials extended a dawn-to-dusk curfew until Sunday in the hopes that their crackdown on protesters would hold.

Bangkok residents: 'This is a mini-civil war'

In another part of Bangkok, Rujira Jeawskun, a 22-year-old international coordinator for a travel firm, said she went out Thursday in her neighborhood to buy groceries.

"There are people going out to live their lives, too, but it's not that busy or so crowded like the normal Bangkok," she said, noting that the main topics among her neighbors were the Red Shirts and the Central World Mall fire. "I have to say that I'm no Red Shirt, I'm not Yellow Shirt (opposed to former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra). I'm not with any shirts. But I just feel so sad. How can people who are asking for democracy burn our country like that?"

Back at the Emporium. Jakaphom Boonyai, a salesman there, said he felt better since the government was more in control.

"As for the next few days, I'm 50-50 -- I won't be surprised if some violence will still break out. I'm watching the latest news updates as much as I can to know what's going on out there."

Jeawskun said she was not optimistic that residents would come back together any time soon.

"I think putting the city back together, mentally, will be long. ...Our feeling is not the same anymore. Can we trust others since on the news we saw Thai people who did hurtful things to Thailand?" she said. "Maybe rebuilding the city might be quick, but the understanding between Thai people might take a long time."

สื่อนอกรายงาน ชุมนุมยุติ แต่หลายพื้นที่ถูกเผา

หลายสื่อต่างชาติรายงานสถานการณ์การเมืองไทยหลังการชุมนุม ยุติลง ว่ายังคงเกิดเหตุวุ่นวาย ห้างสรรพสินค้าชั้นนำบริเวณราชประสงค์ถูกเผาโจมตี ซึ่งรัฐบาลไทยอาจต้องประกาศภาวะฉุกเฉินในกรุงเทพฯ...

เมื่อวันที่ 19 พ.ค. สำนักข่าวเอพีรายงานสถานการณ์การเมืองไทย หลังมีการแถลงยุติการชุมนุมว่า มีการจุดไฟเผาสถานที่สำคัญบางส่วนใจกลางกรุงเทพฯ ส่งผลให้มีกลุ่มควันดำลอยขโมงบนน่านฟ้า แม้ว่า พ.อ.สรรเสริญ แก้วกำเนิด โฆษกศูนย์อำนวยการแก้ไขสถานการณ์ฉุกเฉิน (ศอฉ.) จะแถลงว่า สถานการณ์ทุกอย่างอยู่ภายใต้การควบคุมก็ตาม

ขณะที่รอยเตอร์ไลฟ์ รายงานว่า เกิดเพลิงไหม้ที่ 'เซ็นทรัลเวิล์ด' ห้างสรรพสินค้าชั้นนำย่านราชประสงค์ และบางพื้นที่ของกรุงเทพฯ รวมถึงบริเวณชั้นหนึ่งของตลาดหลักทรัพย์แห่งประเทศไทย (ตลท.) โรงภาพยนตร์สยาม ห้างเกษรพลาซ่า ก็ถูกเผาโจมตีด้วยเช่นกัน ซึ่งรัฐบาลไทยอาจต้องประกาศภาวะฉุกเฉินในพื้นที่กรุงเทพฯ

นอกจากนี้ ชาวกรุงเทพฯ รายหนึ่ง (ไม่เปิดเผยชื่อ) กล่าวผ่านสำนักข่าวซีเอ็นเอ็น ว่า เหตุการณ์บ้านเมืองคล้ายสงครามกลางเมืองขนาดย่อม ต้องคอยระวังตัวและติดตามข่าวสารอย่างใกล้ชิดตลอดเวลา.
